The Medieval Keep

On the optional interior tour, the OPW guide explains how the building served as a residence, a stronghold and a center of administration. Modern walkways provide views through the ruined interior, helping you picture the floors and rooms that once filled the tower.

Beyond the keep, the surviving curtain walls define the castle enclosure. The castle’s position beside a crossing of the River Boyne was central to its importance. From the riverside, you can see how the fortress overlooked the water and the surrounding land. Views across the river toward the keep and walls are among the best opportunities to photograph Trim Castle.

A Castle Built to Command Meath

Hugh de Lacy established his stronghold at Trim after Henry II granted him the Liberty of Meath in 1172. The early timber fort was destroyed in 1174, and the stone castle developed over the following decades under Hugh and his son Walter. It became a powerful statement of Anglo-Norman authority in the region.

The castle was more than a military outpost. It housed the lord’s household and supported the administration of his territory. Later associated with the de Geneville and Mortimer families, it also has connections with royal visitors and the political struggles of medieval Ireland.

Trim Castle and Braveheart

Trim Castle gained a new audience as a filming location for Braveheart, released in 1995. Temporary sets transformed parts of the site during filming in 1994. Today, the castle’s surviving medieval architecture remains the main attraction, with a history stretching back more than eight centuries.

Planning Your Visit

Can We Go Inside the Keep?

Yes, when tours are operating and places are available. Entry is with an OPW guide and requires a separate admission ticket, purchased on arrival. The keep tour takes approximately one hour; we generally allow around 90 minutes for a visit including both the grounds and the keep. We adjust the outdoor walk to fit the tour time.

If the keep tour is unavailable while the grounds are open, your private guide can still lead the outdoor visit. During a full site closure, we will arrange an alternative itinerary.

How Accessible Is the Castle?

The grounds have gravel paths and uneven surfaces, with limited accessibility. The keep involves steep, narrow staircases and is not wheelchair accessible. Comfortable, sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Tell us about any mobility needs so we can plan a suitable visit.

Is There Time for Lunch?

Yes. We allow time for lunch during your private day tour. Meals and the optional keep admission are not included in the tour price; driving expenses, including fuel, tolls and parking, are covered.
