Newgrange Winter Solstice 2024
Newgrange is world renowned for the way the rising sun lights its passage and chamber at the Winter Solstice. From December 19th to 23rd, people are welcome to gather at the entrance of the monument to share the sunrise, which takes place just before 9 a.m. Each morning, a small group of lottery winners is admitted inside the passage tomb to witness the event from within, while everyone else enjoys the special atmosphere outside.

Winter Solstice 2024 at Newgrange: A Celebration of Light and Heritage
Every December, people from across Ireland and around the world gathered at Newgrange in the Boyne Valley to witness one of the most extraordinary events in our ancient calendar, the Winter Solstice sunrise. In 2024, the celebrations took place from 19th to 23rd December, with sunrise occurring just before 9:00 am.
The Ancient Alignment
Newgrange, built over 5,000 years ago, was aligned so that the first rays of the rising sun on the days around midwinter entered through a carefully constructed roof-box and illuminated the inner chamber. For 17 magical minutes, the dark tomb filled with golden light, a breathtaking reminder of the skill and astronomical knowledge of our Neolithic ancestors.

Gathering at the Monument
While only a small number of people could stand inside the chamber, chosen each year by a public solstice lottery, everyone was welcome to gather outside the mound to share in the celebration. Visitors arrived before dawn, watching the horizon brighten as the sun climbed, and joining in a moment of quiet wonder and community.
A Tradition of Renewal
The Winter Solstice at Newgrange was more than an astronomical event, it was a symbol of renewal, hope, and continuity. As the darkest days of the year gave way to the returning light, the gathering at Newgrange connected us with an unbroken thread of human history stretching back millennia.
Whether standing outside in the crisp dawn air, lucky enough to be inside the chamber the Winter Solstice at Newgrange in 2024 was a truly unforgettable experience.
